Mother’s Day.
Today’s society has led us to believe that the relationship between mother and son is one of tender love and nurturing, while dad calls you a sissy for wearing girl’s jeans and spending more time on your hair than your sister. Mom is there to embrace you for being different and unique. I can tell you that my relationship with my mother has been nothing like that. The gender roles in my family are absolutely out of whack. Dad tells me I need to grow my hair longer and talks to me about guitars and Mom has no problem letting me know that my skinny jeans are showing way too much of my package and will probably destroy my chances of having kids (That’s a bad thing?). Mom being tough was the best thing that could have ever happen to me; I joke with my band about dislocating my arm as a child and not being able to use it for a whole summer and her solution was to put ice on it and suck it up. Mom taught me how to deal with my issues and solve problems versus relying on other people to make things happen. She taught me that if I wanted nice clothes, a cell phone, a car, or the latest trendy gizmo that I needed to work and earn those things on my own. She taught that setting a goal and achieving it tastes much sweeter than it being handed to you. It’s those fundamental skill sets that I’ve learned that has led me to my success and will continue to bring me success. Being in a band in 2012 and expecting the world on a silver platter because you just signed a killer deal with Jim Jimson from Big Shot Records is ridiculous, it’s not the 70s anymore, Hell it’s not even the 90s anymore. If you want success, go after it by producing your own results and YOUR hard work will eventually pay off. Thank you for teaching me that, mom.
